John Hurst one of the co-owners of Gathering Greens Farm has been around horses
most of his life. John grew up in down state Illinois, starting with Quarter Horses at a
young age and then entering the Hunter & Jumper world in his late teens and early
twenties in the Chicago land area. In the years that followed he spent much of his
time watching Hunter, Dressage, and other breed shows, he later realized the need for
the development of the quality Sport Pony, something that a child or small adult could use
in various competitions or pleasure. After his move to Michigan in 1992 he began to search
for properties along the lakeshore communities to find a farm that would set the perfect
back drop to make his dream into a reality. Gathering Greens Farm was started in 1999 as
John completely renovated the home on the property. Later he added the barn and
lovely whiteboard fencing which encompasses most of the property, during this time
he was introduced to Martha Stover & Cynthia Lawrence who had imported a Welsh Pony Stallion "Synod Ronan" from Wales, his cross with Thoroughbred race horse mares produced
outstanding Sport Ponies which helped to jump start the farms development in
2003, since then he has expanded the farm and now continues to produce ponies
of extreme high quality.
